When I got home from class I was determined to watch all five hours of ďPride and Prejudice.Ē That was at 6 PM. Now it is 1:30 AM and the movie has just come to its conclusion. (I had to take a break to run two loads of laundry.) Maybe it wasnít such a good idea, but I love that movie. The first time I read Lord of the Rings I started speaking like the characters in the book (read the P.S.) and the same thing is happening now. Jane Austen is affecting my speech. I realize that Iím easily influenced, but watching the movie three times this week would have that effect on anyone.

I am using every possible method to avoid my homework. So, instead of working on it, I bought a couple of table lamps online from Target. Redecorating my apartment is my newest obsession. Two weeks ago I mentioned that I was going to order a couple of nightstands from Pottery Barn, but I havenít done it yet. I was hoping to see them in one of the stores first. At this rate I'll have the lamps before the tables I was planning to put them on.

While watching the Golden Globes IÖ
1) Compiled a wish list of apartment furnishings
2) Bought a floor lamp online from Target
3) Answered four emails that have been sitting in my inbox for more than a week
4) Laughed at a scene from Return of the King on the awards presentation that wasnít even in the movie
5) Posted a new diary entry (go see)
6) Updated my webpage (as you can see)
7) Avoided any website that would post the awards results before the show was over on the West Coast
8) Cheered when Return of the King won best picture

I slept all day, when I should have been at school, because I was feeling sick. Now, when I should be sleeping, I feel better but Iím not tired. Iíll try to make better use of my weekend.

I accidentally left my Palm Pilot at home today so I had to tear a piece of paper out of my course notebook instead. I felt lost without my Palm to jot down random thoughts during class. At the top of the scrap of paper I wrote ďPALM PILOT SUBSTITUTEĒ and I suppose it worked just as well. I even started to compose this update on it. After two weeks of classes my hands are getting used to writing again. I finally took a set of lecture notes that Iím not ashamed for anyone else to see. Speaking of writing, I finished and posted the updates from Friday and Sunday that I mentioned yesterday. The diary entries are still incomplete, though. If I remember my Palm Pilot tomorrow I might make some progress on them.

Probably the last thing I need right now is more books. But what did I do today? Go to Borders and buy more books. And once again my bookshelf is overflowing. Speaking of books, I just posted a diary entry about the BBC Big Read that compares my reading habits with those of the British. I am currently working on two webpage updates from this weekend and two more substantial diary entries, but the book list will have to do for now.

I tried on a shirt at Old Navy today that said ďsnow bunnyĒ across the chest. And if the message was at all true I might have purchased it. But yesterday I tried winter sports for the first time and failed utterly. I went to Snow Summit, one of the ski resorts at Big Bear Lake, and made an unsuccessful attempt at snowboarding. Unsuccessful because of my knee that I screwed up in ballet class when I was twelve. Itís a long story. I turned in my rental snowboard and boots after only a few hours and spent the rest of the day taking pictures. They can be found in the ďBig Bear 2004Ē section of my photo album. The snow looks a bit blue, but you can still tell how much Dan enjoyed the day by the grin on his face.

I've resigned myself to having an apartment full of mismatched furniture - at least until I can afford to buy an entire bedroom set at once. For now I must be content with ordering two nightstands from Pottery Barn to replace the folding tables that are currently serving that purpose. They wonít match the Ikea pieces that furnish the rest of my apartment, but hopefully they wonít look too out of place either. Iíll be moving before the end of the year so I have my future residence to think about as well as my current living quarters. Moving into an with more than one room is even more exciting than getting new furniture.

How many engineers does it take to retract a projection screen? Apparently a room full of graduate students isnít enough. In class today no one could seem to figure it out. Speaking of engineers, I just posted a diary entry relating the recent antics of the members of my research group. The next item on our agenda is to photograph the rapidly disappearing Engineering I building. Itís being torn down at an incredible rate and the demolition is creating a toxic environment outside our lab. The dust on the ground is so thick that you leave footprints like youíre walking in snow. That canít be healthy. And the fact that the workers are wearing masks doesnít make me feel any better.

I turned twenty-five on Friday. I was told this makes me an antique, but Iíd rather not think about that. At my request Dan took me to Catalina Island for the weekend to celebrate my birthday. We saw the beautiful interior of the island on a tour, a movie at the incredible Casino, and exhausted runners finishing a fifty-mile race. We had a great time. So far Iíve posted all of my pictures in the ďCatalina Island 2004Ē section of my photo album and Iíll add Danís as soon as I get them.

I must be in denial about the beginning of the winter quarter. As I was packing my backpack this afternoon I realized I hadnít bought a new notebook. This meant that I had to go get one before my first class started. During class, as I was writing in my new notebook, I remembered how sloppy my handwriting gets after a break from taking several pages of notes everyday. Apparently my hand needs to get used to writing for two hours at a time again. Speaking of writing, I posted another diary entry tonight. (If you havenít read the one I posted on Sunday it can be found in the January diary archive.) This is the one I started writing on December 5 and only finished yesterday. I canít explain why it took so long, but Iím pleased with the result.

I posted a diary entry today. It wasnít the one I promised to post before I went to Tallahassee and it wasnít the one I intended to post as soon as I got back, but it was the first one finished. After I wrote the latest version of my spending rules (see September 8 diary entry) I thought it would be interesting to see how well I followed them. With ďinterestingĒ being the relative term. The entry I didnít post has been in the works for more than a month and remains incomplete. The part of it Iíve already written is pretty good so hopefully Iíll finish it soon. With ďsoonĒ being the relative term.

Note to Dan: Pictures are now available in the "Christmas 2003" section of my photo album. They include images from Tallahassee, Tampa, and Apalachicola in case you were interested. I didn't have time to give the photos names yet, but they should be fairly self explanatory. As you can see the camera worked beautifully.
Note to everyone else: Thanks to my new digital camera, given to me by the aforementioned Dan, I have multitudes of pictures from my Christmas vacation. I uploaded absolutely every image I had available, but I may rethink that in the future and change the contents of the album. You may notice I haven't added anything else to my webpage, though. Well, my classes don't start until Thursday so I'll have some time to work on updates after I get back to LA.
