Lauren in Boston

Since most of the pictures I took in Boston are on Danís camera (along with the oneís from our trip to Snow Summit two weeks ago) I am posting one of the few I took with my camera before the battery died. I will post the rest in my photo album when I get them from Dan. Until then, marvel at the height of the snow drift on a street in Bostonís North End. Do I look cold in the picture? I was.

It's not supposed to be above freezing the entire time I'm in Boston.

(10:52 AM) Edited to add: I'm in big trouble.

I've been using the "pile" method of organization in my cubicle at work. This involves putting printouts of wire drawings and related data that I'm working on in piles on the desk and floor. It isn't the most elegant strategy, but it seemed to work just fine. Until today. Last week I was given a set of wire diagrams that needed to be edited immediately, so I put aside what I was working on at the time to do that. Now that I have completed the more pressing task I was planning to go back to my original task, but I can't seem to find the pile(s) that correspond to it. I should have know this would be a problem eventually.

So far this morning:
1) My neighbors had their SUV parked in front of my garage this morning. So I had to get them to move it at 6:15 AM before I could drive to work.
2) The fog was so thick on my way to work that I couldn't see across intersections. So I drove much slower than usual and hoped that everyone had the sense to turn on their headlights.
3) I forgot to bring my gym bag to work. So I will have to go home at lunch and pick it up if I want to work out this afternoon. And I do.

I am spending a relaxing day at home. This includes watching television, reading a book, and putting together my new dining table and chairs. My apartment is almost completely furnished now and itís starting to look like someone actually lives here. I canít afford the larger bookcase that I want yet, but in a month or so I should be able to buy it. Then my books, movies, and trinkets wonít be packed onto a little bookcase (and in boxes on the floor) like they are now. The next time I clean up the place Iíll take some pictures to show everyone what my apartment looks like, but right now I have large cardboard boxes and packing foam (from the table and chairs) all over the floor. Home sweet (messy) home.

Listening to Billy Graham thank God for granting President Bush a second term makes me want to barf. If God chose all of our leaders don't you think we our world would have fewer problems?

I owe a debt of gratitude to Olay Complete All Day Moisture Lotion SPF 15 face lotion. It was already part of my morning beauty regimen before last weekend and for this I am very glad. On Saturday I was snowboarding on the slopes of Snow Summit from 8 AM to 5 PM and I got very little sun on my face (the only part of my skin that was exposed). I wasn't even able to reapply the lotion, but I was still able to avoid the sunburn that Dan and the other guys left Big Bear with. For this I am eternally grateful. I am committed to keeping my skin looking youthful by avoiding sun exposure so I appreciate an effective sunscreen. Thank you, Olay Complete.

I've been trying to win Big Bear Mountain lift tickets from a Los Angeles radio station all week. KOST does a word scramble every morning around 9 AM, but I haven't been able to figure out the solution until today. Unfortunately I couldn't get through on the phone even when I did have the answer. I would love to win four lift tickets, but no luck so far. Maybe next week.

But as of this morning lift tickets are no longer the prize for the word scramble winner. Besides the fact that I really wanted to go snowboarding for free, I figured out the solution again today so I am doubly disappointed. I still couldn't get through to the station, though, so the switch made little difference. Nevertheless, I would have liked to win.

One of the birthday presents Dan gave me has a nose wipe. Can't guess what it is? Need another hint? It also has designated pockets for hand warmers. Yes, I got Gore-Tex gloves for my birthday. They'll come in handy since we're going snowboarding at Snow Summit again this weekend. My old gloves got soaked through the last time because it was sleeting/snowing while we were on the slopes. Having cold and wet hands is very uncomfortable while snowboarding so I greatly appreciate the new superior gloves. Dan and I are leaving tonight to drive up to Big Bear because only one of three roads is open after the recent storms. The traffic will be awful, but at least we won't be caught in it tomorrow morning when we'd rather be on the slopes. I hope everyone has a good weekend. I know I will.

There are a lot of things I want to say, but I am tired and I want to go to bed soon. Until I get a chance to write more, check out the snowboarding pictures I just posted. They are in the "Snow Summit 2004" section of my photo album. There are actually a couple of pictures of me snowboarding, believe it or not.

My dad sent me the funniest e-card from Hallmark for my birthday. The cat in the card looks and acts like my cat Tom, as illustrated in the above pictures, so I loved it even more. Because of the rain (check out the ďBirthday 2005Ē section of my photo album for pictures of the flooding) Iíve spent my birthday at home by myself. It hasnít been much fun so I will be glad to go back to work tomorrow. That may be a first.

I thought the only (in)famous person I shared a birthday with was Richard Nixon, but I was wrong. It seems that Severus Snape also celebrates his birthday on January 9. At least, according to J. K. Rowling he does. Not much of an improvement, if you ask me.

I am taking advantage of a peaceful Friday night at home to spend some quality time with my computer. The first thing I did was finish a funny story about Christmas for my diary that I started writing last month. I know itís a bit late for Christmas stories, but I didnít want to wait another year to post it. So if you donít mind reading about Christmas two weeks after the fact go to my diary or my Livejournal and check it out.

ďAnd even though I wouldnít say I appreciate ALL of your letters (especially the one I just got asking me where a fan of the film of Princess Diaries 2 can buy the book of the movie, since she likes it better than MY version of what happens to Miaóalthough may I just point out, as Miaís creator, what I say happens to her is what ACTUALLY happens to her, not what Disney says happens to her, even though they did a lovely job and I enjoyed their version very much, despite the fact that none of it will ever happen in my books).Ē

(8:30 AM) As I walked to the library last night I heard cheering coming from homes along the way as their residents watched the NCAA football championship game. At the time I wondered why so many Seal Beach residents were interested. Then this morning I heard that USC won in a blowout victory and I knew why.

(1:10 PM) The decision of whether or not to go to aerobics this afternoon was made when I ate a hot dog for lunch. I was at Target and it just sounded so good! The hot dog was delicious, but it made a trip to the gym absolutely necessary.

I made the mistake of picking up a book I had on hold at the library this evening. How is this a mistake, you ask? Well, now I want to read the newly checked out book more than the one Iíve had for weeks and is due back on Saturday. I am debating giving up on the less appealing book for now and checking it out again when Iíve depleted my stock of dying-to-read books. It wonít be long before Iíve read every book Tamora Pierce has written and then Iíll need to look for something else. Once I purchase the larger bookshelf Iíve had my eye on Iíll have space for all the reading material I can handle. If only I could decide on a book to read tonight...

ďAlyís story is a pair of books instead of a quartet thanks to J. K. Rowling (I havenít met her!), who taught adults that American kids will read thicker books, which means I donít need four books to tell a complete story.Ē

I had about ten things I wanted to do today, but all of yesterdayís rain flooded the intersections of Seal Beach and I donít want to drive anywhere. Actually I did accomplish a few things today, but none of the big tasks that I had planned. At least I didnít spend much money. My bank accounts are still low even though I am working. Hopefully that will change soon because I just paid my Christmas credit card bill. Before I go back to work tomorrow I need to finish unpacking from my trips to Tallahassee and Snow Summit and iron some clothes. Oh, and take down my Christmas tree. I almost forgot about that.

Happy New Year! I am thankful to be here to say it after semi-successfully snowboarding yesterday at Snow Summit. It's actually a long story so I'll leave it for another time. For now I'll just say that even though I am very sore, I am still in one piece.
