Dan and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary on Tuesday, but I didn't get around to making an anniversary cake until Friday. My goal is to one day find/create a recipe that closely mimics our delicious wedding cake. Last year's attempt wasn't as successful as I would have liked so I tried something different this year. The good thing is that it turned out much better, but it doesn't look much like our wedding cake (the top layer of which we still have in the freezer). Thank you to Woman's Day magazine for their Orange Spice Celebration Cake which I tweaked to create this year's anniversary cake. I also added some Orange Buttercream Frosting in the middle to make it a bit more interesting. It's actually pretty tasty! Happy anniversary one more time, Dan. Now let's eat some of that cake!

Eight years ago was our first date. Two years ago was our wedding. Dan, I can't imagine spending my life with anyone else. Every day I am reminded how perfect you are for me and how lucky I am to have met you. I am so proud to be your wife. Happy anniversary, my love - the eighth anniversary of our first date and our second wedding anniversary. I love you!

I had a bad workout today. Usually going to the gym makes me feel better when I'm upset, but today it was the workout itself that made me grumpy. I just wasn't able to exercise at my usual levels and that annoyed me to no end. Here are the reasons it all went wrong:
1) I didn't drink a second bottle of water this afternoon and when this happens there are almost always consequences. I opted for a can of Coke Zero instead. Big mistake. 2) I got way more tired than usual during the aerobic portion of class. This can probably be attributed to item #1, but that didn't make it any less frustrating. 3) I am overdue for a new pair of sneakers and my feet were killing me. The support in my current shoes is shot and I couldn't feel my toes after a while. 4) (This might be TMI for the guys) I was wearing a sports bra that was too big and there was too much "movement," shall we say. I wish I could return that thing. 5) I have some joint problems. In recent weeks my knees and ankles have been bothering me and I hate feeling limited like that.
Of course none of these things will keep me from going back to the gym tomorrow, but beforehand I'll make sure to drink enough water. Here's to more energy tomorrow!

After vowing in mid-May to do a better job of keeping my webpage up to date, I've really been slacking since the Lakers won last Sunday. But never fear, I am planning to post something when I get home tonight. After all, tomorrow is Dan and my second wedding anniversary. I'm looking forward to it!

NBA Championship Game 5: Lakers 99, Magic 86
Who are the NBA champions? The Lakers are the NBA champions! I am actually very surprised that they won today in Orlando, but it's still a sweet ending for Laker fans. I had my doubts about this team in the post season, but they proved me wrong time and time again. Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers, 2009 NBA champions.

NBA Championship Game 4: Lakers 99, Magic 91 (OT)
And just like that the Lakers are up 3-1 in the NBA Finals! I only got to watch the second half of the game because I was dropping off dinner at my co-worker's house, but what a second half it was! I listened to the first half on the radio as I was driving, but what I heard gave me little hope for a Laker win. But Derek Fisher managed to hit two 3-pointers - one to tie the game and take it to overtime, and another to put them over the top in OT. As much as I criticize the guy for missing shots (he loves 3-pointers but he rarely makes them), he won Game 4 for his team. And now that they have their win in Orlando I think the Lakers have a very good chance of being this year's NBA champions. I am so excited for Game 5 on Sunday!

I've been cooking for the past four hours. I'm making dinner for a co-worker who has a broken ankle and a new baby - I feel sorry for his wife! They certainly don't have time to cook so I'm taking them some food tomorrow after work. I hope they like my lasagna as much as I do! And besides the positive feeling from doing something for others, I'm very excited to have half a pan of lasagna left over for Dan and me. There are several topics I planned to write about today, but I'm too tired and it's too late to go into any of those. Tomorrow is Game 4 of the NBA Finals so I'll be watching that when I get home. I got the Laker shirt I ordered in the mail today, but it's too casual to wear to work tomorrow so I'll have to save it for Game 5 on Sunday. Since the Lakers lost when I wore purple yesterday I won't feel bad not wearing their colors tomorrow. And on that note, I realize the video I posted yesterday would be more relevant if I posted the original one - Most Valuable Babysitter (Lil Dez). I love the Nike Most Valuable Puppets marketing campaign!

I can't say I'm surprised by the outcome of tonight's game, but it wasn't exactly what I expected. I figured the Lakers were going to lose today, but I thought it would be because they failed to show up. That didn't happen. I also figured that the Magic would play much better than they did in Los Angeles. That didn't happen. They played phenomenally better! The Lakers actually played a good game, but the Magic looked like a totally different team. I'm not even sure they're that good - they just had a once in a lifetime performance. I don't think we'll ever see Orlando play that well again. That makes tonight's loss a bit easier to handle. I said the Lakers only need to win one game in Orlando to have their chance at the championship and I still believe that. One down, two to go.

NBA Championship Game 2: Lakers 101, Magic 96 (OT)
As the game was winding down I wasn't sure they were going to pull it off, but the Lakers managed to win last night! And with two wins at home, as long as they win one game in Orlando I think their chances of another NBA championship are good. I'm already looking forward to Game 3 tomorrow. Go Lakers!

Dan and I have discovered the television gem that is Flight of the Conchords. At first we were drawn to this show because it's about a musical duo from New Zealand, but then we discovered that it's hilarious too. The picture above is a poster that hangs on the wall of the fictional New Zealand consulate in New York City. Another poster says "New Zealand...Why Not?" They crack me up. Although most of the show is very low-key, each episode has at least one elaborate musical number that features the band singing about a really ridiculous situation. It's like a musical, but very surreal. Dan bought me the Season 1 DVD set for Easter and I'm already looking forward to the Season 2 release in August (since we don't get HBO). It's not a substitute for the real New Zealand, but it'll have to do until we can get back.

NBA Championship Game 1: Lakers 100, Magic 75
Holy cow! The last thing I expected from Game 1 of the NBA Finals was a Laker blowout since the Magic already dispatched LeBron James in the previous round, but I'll take it! (I think I gave the Lakers the edge because I dug up a purple t-shirt to wear to work today. Maybe.) Since the game started so early for those of us on the West Coast (even though the game is here in LA), I listened to the first quarter on the radio as I was driving home from the gym. When I got home I had to watch the rest of the game by myself because this is Dan's weekly Dungeons and Dragons night. I was only half paying attention during the second half because the Lakers were so far ahead and because the games aren't nearly as much fun to watch without my husband. I'm looking forward to watching Game 2 with him this weekend. Go Lakers!

As I'm watching Game 1 of the NBA Championship (and before I bore everyone with more basketball talk) I have a restaurant review to offer.
I read about Wurstküche in Los Angeles Magazine and I immediately wanted to eat there. I mean, with the promise of exotic sausages and specialty dipping sauces for fries, who wouldn't? So Dan and I headed to downtown LA (not exactly in our neck of the woods) over the Memorial Day weekend, guided by our sometimes trusty GPS unit, in search of this food wonderland. When we arrived at the address in the magazine we were apprehensive, though. The street was pretty deserted, the storefront looked abandoned, and there was no advertisement for any kind of commercial establishment. Kind of gang-like, actually. But as soon as we worked up the courage to open the door we found a dimly lit restaurant filled with respectable-looking patrons who had some delicious-looking food in front of them. So different from the exterior! I ordered a rabbit, veal, and pork sausage that was absolutely delicious. Dan was more adventurous with a rattlesnake and rabbit sausage (and a bratwurst for good measure) and he said it was tasty as well. We had curry ketchup and chipotle aioli dipping sauces with our fries and washed everything down with exotic beers (for Dan) and sodas (for me). All in all it was a great experience and we'll definitely be going back to try more of the sausages on the menu.
