This time last year I was ramping up my running again after suffering from IT band problems in January and February. The Coaster Run 5K at Knott’s Berry Farm was my second race after about a month of rest. I actually dropped down from the 10K to the 5K because I knew I wasn’t ready for the 6.2 mile distance yet. I was so happy to be running without pain again, but I had a long way to go to get back to my previous fitness level. Running a few miles through Knott’s Berry Farm was a lovely way to work on that goal, at least! Fast forward to today and the 2016 Coaster Run is this Sunday. Once again I’m registered for the 10K, but as of this morning I realized that it was going to be too much for me to handle. After sustaining an injury four weeks ago and then coming down with some cold/flu combination at the tail end of my Orlando/Bahamas vacation I am not in the greatest shape right now. This is really frustrating since I’d been really consistent and fairly successful with my running since the beginning of the year. But when I had to leave work early today because I was feeling so rotten (I guess working a full day yesterday was a mistake) I knew I needed to lower my expectations for the race this weekend. Not only have I not run in almost a month, but my head and chest congestion aren’t going to make the endeavor any easier. (Not to mention the fact that it’s supposed to rain cats and dogs on Sunday.) One way or another this weekend is going to be interesting. Hopefully, like last year, the Coaster Run is my first step on the road back to regular and pain-free running. I’ll let you know how it goes!
