Tomorrow I'm going to pick up my wedding dress. I'm so excited!

Memorial Day weekend recap:
Friday, 5/25 - Went to work, to the gym, and to the Dodgers vs. Cubs game in Los Angeles. It was an exciting game. The Cubs lost, just like the Wednesday game we went to in San Diego, but they really should have won after scoring seven runs in the 7th inning.
Saturday, 5/26 - Went to see "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" after Dan's haircut appointment. Just so you know, movie theaters aren't very crowed at 10 AM on a Saturday. Later than evening we watched the season finales of Robin Hood, 24, and Lost (thanks to Tivo). They we all very good (except maybe 24).
Sunday, 5/27 - Went to the Dodgers vs. Cubs game. The Cubs lost again and it was really pathetic this time. With the bases loaded, a guy got hit by a pitch to walk in the winning run in the 11th inning.
Monday, 5/28 - Went to the gym. I can't afford to slack off on my workouts now that the wedding is less than four weeks away. When I got home I spent several hours cooking delicious dinner, if I do say so myself. I love cooking when I'm not in a rush. And now I need to get ready for the week ahead.

I just got back from my third - and final - dress fitting and I couldn't be happier! My wedding dress fits perfectly and the shoes I finally decided on for the ceremony are going to work out just fine. (I'm still planning to change shoes for the reception to avoid stepping on my hem while dancing.) The seamstress needs to add a bustle to the dress, but that's the last of the alterations and I'll be able to pick it up sometime next week. I'm so excited about wearing my wedding dress one month from today!

Dan and I are going to the Cubs vs. Padres game in San Diego tonight so we have to leave around 4:30 to drive down there. I took the day off from work and, except for going to my dress fitting, I've been pretty lazy all day. I was also supposed to go to the post office and the gym today, but I dawdled long enough to run out of time. I'm planning to take tomorrow afternoon off too so I guess I'll get around to those things then. I love taking time off!

I forgot to mention that Dan and I received our first two wedding RSVPs yesterday! One is from some local friends who will be attending (yay!), and the other is from my aunt and uncle who will not be attending. That's no surprise, though, since my cousin (their daughter) is getting married on the same day.

I released my document for review today. It wasn't until around 8:45 PM, but that still counts as "today." The extra hours I worked this past week should not only count as overtime, but I should get hazard pay for this evening in particular. The eardrum-piercing fire alarm was going off for the last two hours I was at work and it made me want to scream. (Being a graduate of Lincoln High School, my first instinct was to ignore the alarm when it went off, but I suppressed those urges and made sure there wasn't a real emergency before going back to work.) Unfortunately I don't get paid for any time I work beyond the usual 40-hour week, but since I have so many extra hours already I'm planning to take a day and a half off instead. That's gonna be nice.

The Little Mermaid will be playing on Broadway starting in November. Now I have to think of a legitimate excuse to go to New York City!

Today I went to work for eight hours, came home and cooked dinner, and then watched "Lost" with Dan while we ate. It was just like any other weekday. Except the fact that today is actually Sunday and it was the first chance we had to watch the Wednesday episode of "Lost." We're busy people. Fortunately I should be able to take at least one day off this week because of the overtime I worked today. That's assuming I get my document released tomorrow as planned. I made significant progress today, but there's still plenty of work to be done. Tomorrow is another day.

Unfortunately my workweek begins tomorrow. I was supposed to release a document for review yesterday, but it wasn't in any shape for that when I left work last night. So I have to go to work tomorrow and see if I can make some progress. I have enjoyed my Saturday, though. Dan and I briefly met with our wedding officiant this morning in the San Diego area, but that was our only commitment of the weekend. When we got home I read through some cooking magazines for recipes (we had salsa chicken for dinner tonight), read a book (I need to take it back to the library this week and I want to finish it first), and watched Robin Hood on TV (my new favorite show). The upcoming week is going to be really busy so I'm glad I got to enjoy my one-day weekend, at least.

I'm spending my evening home alone doing laundry and watching television, which is very satisfying. I'm emptying our clothes hampers and the TiVo memory at the same time! I really should be doing some research on wedding ceremonies since Dan and I are meeting with our officiant on Saturday, but I'd rather relax. I'll pick up some books on the subject at the library tomorrow instead. Now that all of the wedding invitations have been sent (I bought stamps and dropped the final batch in the mail at lunch today) we can concentrate on other things. Maybe I'll even have an update that's not wedding related soon!

Thank goodness for self-adhesive stamps. They are seriously one of the greatest inventions of the Twentieth Century. Seriously. If I had to lick all of the stamps I used for our wedding invitations I would have gone crazy. I used water to seal the envelopes, which was tedious, but at least I didn't have to taste the glue. So now our wedding invitations are finished except that a few are lacking postage. The remaining invitations will go out in the mail tomorrow after I go to the post office and buy more 41 cent stamps. I would like to apologize to anyone who gets a wedding invitation with some strange combination of stamps on it. I improvised with 39 cent and 2 cent stamps in some cases because I didn't want them to go to waste! As long as the invitations reach their destinations (and don't get sent back due to improper postage) I'll be happy.

I just dropped the first batch of wedding invitations in the mail! That was something of a relief. I ran out of 41 cent stamps last night with just one invitation to go, but I was able to improvise with 39 cent and 2 cent stamps instead. I'll need to go to the post office and get another roll of 100 stamps before the next batch of invitations is ready to mail. The reason I couldn't mail all of them at once is because of the whole running out of envelopes fiasco. Stupid printer. Fortunately the package from Crane arrived yesterday with more envelopes so we should be able to finish up the invitations tonight. In other news, Dan and I are really making progress with our ballroom dancing. Thank you, Arthur Murray! More on that later.

While watching 24 last night I stuffed most of the wedding invitations (the ones that have envelopes printed). I'm going to take them to the post office today to weigh them and see how much postage they need for mailing. Yesterday I bought a roll of 41 cent stamps (100) for the reply cards plus two sheets of 2 cent stamps (40) so that the old rate stamps won't go to waste. Hopefully tomorrow everything will be ready to send out the invitations! The finished ones at least. We're still waiting for the next batch of envelopes to arrive from Crane so that we can print the remaining addresses. At least we're making progress!

We had a roller coaster weekend. On Friday Dan and I planned dinner and a movie where we would, in Dan's words, "watch garlic and eat Spider-Man." This means that we ate at The Stinking Rose, a restaurant that specializes in garlic, and went to see Spider-Man 3 afterwards. It was a wonderful evening. Then on Saturday we worked on wedding stuff. Dan printed the invitations while I scanned some pictures from my childhood that my parents mailed to me. Unfortunately our printer messed up a bunch of the envelopes during the printing process so I had to order more online (I can't find a local store that carries them). Also, I need to buy some 41 cent stamps for the reply cards since the postage rate went up today. Hopefully we'll have everything sorted out to mail the invitations by the end of the week. Less than six weeks to go!

Very scary. The marine layer hid the Catalina Island smoke plume from mainland Los Angeles this morning, but we can't escape it on the news.

The latest wildfire on Catalina Island is making me feel really insensitive about what I posted about the Griffith Park fire earlier. Fires always break out in the LA area in the summer/fall dry season, but there have already been two this week that have threatened well-known landmarks places. This picture is just scary. The idea of a fire destroying the city of Avalon is even scarier because it's such a beautiful place.

Two silly things:
1) I think I'm going to have two pairs of wedding shoes - one pair for the ceremony with a lower heel and one pair for the reception that is slightly higher. This way my feet will be as comfortable as possible and the higher heels will ensure I don't step on my dress while dancing. I've been wearing my Naturalizer shoes at dance class this week and they feel OK, but I still need to buy a pair of ballroom dance shoes that fit. I'll add that to my list of things to do this weekend.
2) Due to the fire in Griffith Park on Tuesday TiVo recorded 50 minutes (out of 60) of news coverage instead of the new episode of Gilmore Girls. While the fire was extremely traumatic to the Los Angeles residents, some of us wanted to see Gilmore Girls! I know this sounds shallow, but the series is going to end next week and now I don't know what happened in the penultimate episode!

I could see the plume of smoke from the Griffith Park fire as I was driving to ballroom dance class last night. It was eerie. Dan and I were at the observatory just last November for it's grand reopening after a more than four-year closure. It's sad to know that most of the park burned yesterday and the fire still hasn't been put out.

What I actually accomplished this weekend:
1) Took Dan's car to the dealer for service. This gave me three hours of uninterrupted reading time while I waited, which was a plus.
2) Returned three pairs of potential wedding shoes that just didn't work out.
3) Tried to buy some ballroom dancing shoes, but the store was closed.
4) Baked four kinds of cookies to prepare for making wedding favors. Note to self: 1 Tbsp cookie dough = 2.5" baked cookie. Perfect for favor boxes!
5) Drove to Temecula (not San Diego, as previously stated) for my hair trial. Loved it! I have a couple of pictures so email me if you would like to see them.
6) Made a massive amount of spaghetti for dinner last night which didn't turn out too badly. The leftovers will feed us when we get home late from dance class.
7) Did not clean the house. Really wish I had.

Since Dan is camping out in the desert this weekend, I'm on my own and I have a full schedule. Tomorrow morning I have to take Dan's car to the dealer for service and then I have to spend the rest of the day doing wedding stuff. Shopping for ballroom dance shoes that fit, returning shoes that don't fit, buying 41 cent stamps for the invitations (darn postage rate increase!), continuing to plan our honeymoon, etc. On Sunday I'm driving down to San Diego for my wedding hair trial. I'm really looking forward to that. Then I need to clean the house. I'm not looking forward to that, but it needs to be done. I'm glad I made myself go to the gym after work today (my sixth day in a row!) because I don't think I'll have time to go this weekend. I looked at a calendar today and realized that our wedding is in seven weeks! So little time!

I have come to the realization that I may never find shoes that are comfortable to dance in. *sigh*

The Naturalizer shoes I ordered from shoes.com arrived yesterday and I think they're a definitely possibility for the wedding. They fit (thank goodness for narrow widths) and were pretty comfortable for the few minutes I had them on last night. The real test will be wearing them to dance class this evening. If I can dance in them then we might have a winner!
